August II the Strong, Thaler 1729 IGS, Dresden – rare
Obverse:
A bust in right-facing profile, clad in armor and covered by a cloak.
On the rim, an inscription divided at the top by the regnal apple: D G FRID AUGUST REX POL DUX SAX I C M A & W
Reverse:
A crown. Beneath the crown, between palm branches, two shields bearing the Polish, Lithuanian, and Saxon coats of arms. Below, the date 1729, the initials I G S (Johann Georg Schomburg—Master of the Dresden Mint), and the mint mark (a hook).
Around the rim, an inscription divided at the top by a crown: SAC ROM IMP ARCHIM ET ELECTOR
Condition: NGC AU53
A beautifully struck and well-preserved piece. A rare year of issue. High NGC grade. This is the very piece that received the highest NGC grade of AU53, and it is the only piece with this grade. In this condition, the coin is rare and difficult to find on the collector’s market.
