Paweł Bienkiewicz, born in 1962, creates abstract works in which he dresses the Machine of the Universe in snapshots of his own observations. His work features motifs of space, interdimensional transitions, undulations, vibrations, the transformation of energy and matter, the contrast of light and shadow, tonal play of colors, and symbols.
A distinctive feature of the artist’s paintings is a technique he calls 3D PREDRAPING. Here, the artist has created his own visual language, combining canvas-sculpting with airbrush glazing. In a complex creative process, the work’s surface undergoes multiple transformations, shifting from a two-dimensional plane to a three-dimensional space. At the same time, the process of capturing and painting the temporary deformations of the canvas takes place in multiple stages. Thanks to this, each work serves as a unique documentation of what might escape our notice and will never happen again. This original technique allows for the enhancement of three-dimensional qualities in flat images, so that the finished works attract with their depth, force the viewer to constantly change their viewing angle, and conceal a certain multidimensional mystery. Perhaps, when looking at these freeze-frame images, we are inside an atom and see the microcosm of elementary particles frozen for a moment; it is also possible that we are in outer space and see vast expanses of the universe.
Paweł Bienkiewicz’s paintings constitute an unusual fusion of three movements: conceptualism, aestheticism, and op art. Thanks to an open approach to experimenting with creative space, the artist is constantly developing his own unique technique.
