Paweł Bienkiewicz, born in 1962, creates abstract works in which he imbues the Machine of the Universe with snapshots of his own observations. His work features motifs of space, interdimensional transitions, undulations, vibrations, the transformation of energy and matter, the contrast between light and shadow, tonal interplay of colors, and symbols.
A distinctive feature of the artist’s paintings is a technique he calls 3D PREDRAPING. Here, the artist has created his own visual language, combining canvas sculpting with airbrush glazing. In this complex creative process, the working space of the painting undergoes multiple transformations, shifting from a two-dimensional plane to a three-dimensional space. At the same time, the process of fixing and painting the temporary deformations of the canvas takes place in multiple stages. As a result, each work serves as a unique documentation of what might otherwise escape our attention and will never be repeated. This original technique enhances the three-dimensional qualities of two-dimensional paintings, causing the finished works to captivate with their depth, forcing the viewer to constantly shift their perspective, and concealing a certain multidimensional mystery. Perhaps, when looking at these “freeze-frame” images, we are inside an atom and see the microcosm of elementary particles frozen for a moment; it is also possible that we find ourselves in outer space, gazing upon the vast expanses of the universe.
Paweł Bienkiewicz’s works represent an unusual fusion of three movements: conceptualism, aestheticism, and Op Art. Thanks to an open approach to experimenting with creative space, the artist is constantly developing his own unique technique.
