Antanas Sutkus (b. 1939) is one of the most famous Lithuanian photographers, a representative of the humanistic photography movement, a laureate of the National Prize for Culture and Art. He is considered to be the founder of the Lithuanian school of photography and its long-lasting shaping, as well as the founder of the Lithuanian Photographers' Union.
Sutkus's work is characterised by black and white documentary photography, a humanistic approach to man, psychological portraiture and capturing everyday moments. His work often depicts children, ordinary people, provincial life, and the intelligentsia, revealing the dignity, fragility, and inner state of a person. One of the most famous series is People of Lithuania, which has become a kind of visual chronicle of Lithuania in the second half of the 20th century.
