Léger - French cubist painter, printmaker, sculptor, ceramist and film director. From 1900 he lived and worked in Paris, and during World War II in exile in the USA.
From around 1910 he developed a distinctive style, creating abstract and semi-abstract works with cylindrical forms. He reduced the human figure to a pure form. Mechanical forms are a constant in his work, for example in designs for the Swedish Ballet (1921-1922), frescoes (such as the polychrome of the Brussels Stadium, 1935) and the abstract film "Ballet mécanique" (1924) with music by Georges Antheil.
His student, assistant since 1948, and wife since 1952 was Nadia Léger, formerly known as Wanda Chodasiewicz-Grabowska.
