On September 18, 1939, Red Army troops entered Polish Vilnius. Under a treaty between the governments of the USSR and Lithuania, signed on October 10, 1939, Vilnius was to be annexed to Lithuania. On October 27, 1939, Lithuanian troops entered Vilnius. The Lithuanian occupation of Vilnius ended on June 15, 1940, when Lithuania was occupied by the USSR.
In connection with this event, several one-day propaganda publications were issued on October 28, 29, 30, 31. The publishing address was given as Vilnius, but the prints may have been prepared in Kaunas and delivered to Vilnius, where they were distributed in the streets of the city. Among the one-day issues noted in the Jagiellonian Library are "Our Message" of Oct. 28, Hello Lithuania!(Sveika Lietuva!) of Oct. 29, Pogon (Vytis) of Oct. 30, Brotherhood (Brolybė) of Oct. 31 .
[Bibliography: Annales Academiae Paedagogicae Cracoviensis, Folia 12 Studia Historicolitteraria II (2002), Krzysztof Wozniak "Vilnius Polish-language one-day newspapers of October 1939"].
The author, based on pieces from the Jagiellonian Library, describes as the first one-newspaper the printing of "Nasha Depesha" [one-sided] of October 28; as the second he gives Hello Lithuania! (Sveika Lietuva! - the second chronologically, but the first with the designation of editor Andrei Rondomanskis), published on October 29, with an introductory article entitled "Under the Sign of Pogon."
Our piece is marked as No. 1, and has the first headline Hello Lithuania! It lacks the article "Under the Sign of Pogo," so it differs from the one-day paper described as Hello Lithuania!
Most likely, in the Jagiellonian Library's collection, the offered single-issue "Long Live Lithuania" of October 28 was missing here, so "Our Message" was considered the first of the single-issues within the series of 4. Probably "Our Message" was a separate single-issue, perhaps the first chronologically, but outside the series of 4 single-issues edited by Andrew Rondomanskis (Long Live Lithuania!, Welcome Lithuania!, Pogo!, Fraternity!)].
Rarity. In Polish collections (according to NUKAT, KaRo, National Library databases) several pieces of one-day issues Hello Lithuania, Pogon, Brotherhood are recorded, the one described here is not mentioned in known bibliographies or library catalogs.
[Edit 3.11.2025]-already after the catalog was published, 2 later one-day issues of this series were added: Pogon - item 346 and Fraternity - item 347
