Attached to the painting is an opinion by Eliza Ptaszyńska

"(...) The work in several aspects stands out from the output of Polish painters of the last two decades of the nineteenth century.
The author left the Polish imaginative realm in favor of an urban scene, largely foreign to Polish painting. (...) he simply painted a genre scene, created a plastic record of a banal, not in the pejorative sense, street event, most likely authentic. He did it in a masterful way. He brilliantly depicted and individually characterized the onlookers, who represent a whole cross-section of society at the time (...).
Thus, it is an elaborate and socially and psychologically deepened scene. It carries knowledge of the human being. Moreover, in it he contrasts the individual with society. One can find special interests of the author in such a composition. The relationship
between the individual and society, the problem of exclusion or resignation from participation in life were the content of Jawnogrzesznica and Two Worlds, another work by Tomkiewicz (...).
Stanislaw Tomkiewicz remains an almost unknown artist. A few facts from his short life and a few works, including large ones, the painting of which required talent and professional, workshop skills - this is all that has survived from his
legacy. The departure from typically Polish, generic, rural and historical themes makes the artist an interesting figure, and his work to some extent separate from the Polish cultural heritage.
(...) The work coincides with a work shown by Stanislaw Tomkiewicz at an exhibition of the Zacheta Fine Arts Society in Warsaw in 1888 titled Crazy, ol., 75 × 63. The values given
values are inches. Converted to centimeters, the size of the painting is: 190 × 160 cm. The dimensions given (width × height) coincide with those of The Swallowed Sinner. The title of the work presented at the Zachęta Gallery is also well explained. The heroine of the painting is a woman in a moment of desperation. Lost and surrounded by a confluence of onlookers, rather than a community condemning the sinner."
