Biography
In 1966, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, from Michał Bylina’s painting studio. He is a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. He works in painting and printmaking. From 1968 to 1974, he collaborated and exhibited alongside Wiesław Szamborski. His paintings from the 1970s bear the hallmarks of New Figuration. His jarring, sometimes even cacophonous color palette and nonchalant painting style demonstrated a critical attitude toward contemporary social phenomena and the artistic trends prevalent at the time of his debut. He depicted the world unvarnished and ridiculed human vices. In his later period, the artist’s work became less aggressive and more reflective—his compositions are orderly, restrained, and clear, sometimes strikingly concise. Since the 1980s, Marek Sapetto has been commenting on sociopolitical reality in his paintings: “The Round Table” (1995), “Hyde Park,” and “The Broken Mirror” (1996).
