Hanna Bakuła - a well-known painter, writer and publicist - is a graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Her business card reads "controversial person" and she is regarded as such. In 1981 she settled in Manhattan and remained in the States until 1989. She won many prestigious awards there , including an IREX scholarship on the recommendation of the Guggenheim Foundation, and designed costumes and sets for off-Broadway plays, for which she won a New York Times award. She is also a winner of the Slavic Painters Festival in New York. She painted portraits in pastel and there she was called by critics "Witkacy in a skirt."
