Colonel Foucauld served as military attaché to the French embassy in Berlin at the turn of the 20th century. From Wojciech Kossak's letters to his wife, we learn that the men knew each other and met on various social occasions, and that the artist valued and respected the colonel. Among other things, they had the opportunity to meet on the occasion of imperial maneuvers near Szczecin, which may have been the reason for the above painting.
