Michele Rocca (c. 1671 - 1751), The Baptism of Christ

This stunning and dynamic painting reflects the graceful, Rococo-infused Baroque style of Michele Rocca, an artist celebrated for his luminous color palettes, elegant figures, and theatrical compositions. Set in a lush river landscape, the scene captures the sacred moment of Christ's baptism with immense theatricality and spiritual devotion.
At the center, Jesus stands submissively in the waters of the Jordan River while Saint John the Baptist pours water over His head from a shell, holding his characteristic reed cross. Above them, the heavens open in a brilliant burst of golden light, revealing the descent of the Holy Spirit as a dove accompanied by cherubim. To the left, a group of attentive angels wait with garments to receive Christ, their expressive gestures and flowing drapery adding a sense of divine choreography, while additional figures and atmospheric trees frame the right side of the composition
Michele Rocca, active primarily in Rome, was renowned for his cabinet-sized and narrative religious works that bridged the late Roman Baroque tradition with the lighter, more decorative sensibilities of the emerging 18th-century Rococo. This painting exemplifies his mastery of movement, radiant light effects, and harmonious figural grouping. Oil on canvas , 47.5 x 73 cm. This work was previously offered at the Importants Tableaux Anciens sale by Ader-Tajan in Paris, France, on April 10, 1992 (Lot #6), where it was illustrated on page 11 of the official auction catalog and achieved a hammer price of EUR 18,294 (FRF 120,000) against an estimate of EUR 12,196 – EUR 15,245.
