Lot information
Karel Jan Sigmund was one of the most important Czech landscape artists of the first half of the 20th century. His works often draw on a personal relationship with the rural landscape, capturing its atmosphere with an emphasis on the transitional period of winter and spring, as we can see in this painting. In the foreground are the figures who are lost in the vast landscape, which underlines the feeling of loneliness and calm that pervades the entire work. The influence of Oldrich Blazicek is particularly evident in the sensitive work with light and color, while Sigmund's palette is subtle and reflects a realistic approach to depicting nature.
