CHERUBINS CARRY THE PICTURE WITH MARY AND THE CHILD JESUS
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
127 x 104 cm.
Seghers' colorful and detailed floral decorations make this painting special. The movement of the angels lends the work a new dynamic. Four angels carry the Madonna painting, which is adorned with flower festoons and framed in an oval, carved frame. Seghers is considered an important representative of Antwerp flower painting and painted this picture together with the figure painter Cornelius Schut. The precise and detailed realism of Seghers' depictions of flowers and plants, which captivates through the bold use of bright colors, stands in contrast to Schut's free, Rubenesque figuration, which is characterized by a delicate colour palette and airy brushwork.
