Adam Brenner (Vienna 1800-1891) , The Young Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness

This large-scale canvas is a fine example of 19th-century Viennese Academicism. The painting depicts the young Saint John the Baptist reclining in a serene, mountainous landscape. Brenner employs a classicizing style characterized by smooth, porcelain-like skin tones and a meticulous attention to naturalistic detail.
The composition is rich in traditional iconography. St. John is shown as a youth, resting against a mossy bank, his gaze contemplative and forward-looking. He holds his characteristic reed cross, while a lamb—symbolizing the Agnus Dei—rests peacefully beside him, looking up toward the saint. The background features a soft, atmospheric valley under a golden twilight sky, framed by a large, sturdy tree that provides a sense of shelter and permanence. Signed lower left.
