Sigismund III Vasa, Thaler 1629 II, Bydgoszcz – beautiful and very rare
Obverse:
A half-length portrait of the king in armor, holding a sword and the royal orb, facing right.
In the rim: SIGIS III D G REX POL M – Half a doe in the shield – D LIT RVS PRVS MAS
Reverse:
Beneath the crown, a nine-field heraldic shield encircled by the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. On either side of the shield are the initials I – I (Jakub Jakobson van Emden – manager of the Bydgoszcz mint) and the date 16 – 29
In the border: SAM LIV NE NO SVE—Order of the Golden Fleece—GOT VAD Q HRI REX
A variant of the portrait featuring a short sword with a bow behind it and a wide (sinusoidal) ruff—very rare.
A variant featuring the Półkozic coat of arms (of Hermolaus Ligęza—Grand Crown Treasurer) at the bottom of the shield on the reverse.
A variant with the inscription SIGIS … POL … RVS … MAS in the border on the obverse and … NEC … SVE … in the border on the reverse.
A variant with no punctuation marks at the beginning or end of the edge inscription on the obverse and reverse—rare.

A beautifully struck and well-preserved coin. Vivid relief. Beautiful detail. Luster and mint mirror finish. Charming patina. Excellent presentation. High NGC grade. A very rare variant. In this condition, the coin is extremely rare and difficult to find on the collector’s market. A beautiful piece for discerning collectors.
