Acquiring a beautiful trojak is one of the most difficult collecting challenges posed by the coinage of Jan III Sobieski. And although it may sound unremarkable, experienced numismatists fully understand the scale of the problem.
The lowest denomination of Sobieski’s crown coins was not minted on a large scale. It was issued shortly before the mints closed, and the quality of its craftsmanship indicates that it was not a “priority” denomination for the mint’s administrators. Coins like this one are extremely rare.
This is the only Bydgoszcz trojak of John III.
A one-year type, struck after Boratini’s death, when the Bydgoszcz mint was leased to the mint master Samuel von Phachler, whose initials are placed beneath the royal bust. And although it exhibits the typical flaws of this issue—such as sheet metal imperfections or striking imperfections—these are truly minor, and the coin stands out for its robust appearance and, above all, its vibrant, lustrous background.
