Sigismund III Vasa, Ort 1626, Gdańsk – wide chain, PR – rarer and very nice
A portrait of the king with his head turned to the right, wearing a small ruff and the wide chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece—a rarer variety.
A Renaissance shield bearing the coat of arms of Gdańsk, supported by two lions on the reverse.
A variant with an abbreviated date, “2–6,” above the heraldic shield on the reverse.
An inscription variant with the king’s title ending in “… PR” on the obverse.
Condition: 2/2+
Minor flaws in the disc and slight localized under-strikes, but a beautifully preserved piece. Beautiful detail. Brilliance and plenty of mint luster. Early signs of a charming patina. A rarer and underappreciated portrait variant featuring the wide chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. A beautiful coin.
