In 1938 he took up engineering studies in Caen. In 1939 he joined the Foreign Legion. After demobilization, he lived in Avignon with a false Aryan identity. In 1943 he began studying sculpture and painting at the Municipal School of Fine Arts. In 1944 he moved to Paris. He had his first exhibition in 1946 at the Katia Granoff Gallery in Paris. After the war, he took up engraving and medaling in addition to painting. He illustrated 20 literary works, made frescoes for schools and designed tapestries. He had many exhibitions of Europe and the Americas. In 1958, he was invited to the Venice Biennale and received the Critics' Prize. He also won the Feneon Prize.
