Biography
Born in the year of Kenya's independence (1963), Tabitha Wa Thuku began her creative practice as a young amateur artist and one of the few artists of her generation. With a career now approaching three decades, Wa Thuku has made a name for herself as a painter unfettered by conventions, and her work is distinguished by a diverse color palette ranging from subtle browns to rich reds. Her paintings beautifully depict nature, a subject to which Wa Thuku continually returns.
Tabitha Wa Thuku has been creating and exhibiting continuously since 1988. Initially studying textile and garment technology at the Polytechnic University of Kenya, Wa Thuku later attended the Buru-buru Institute of Fine Arts from 1996 to 1999. Wa Thuku has participated in various workshops and artist residencies, which has helped her develop the wide range of techniques evident in her extensive body of work.
In addition to practicing her own art, she has also worked as an art educator, teaching and mentoring children and young artists. Wa Thuku regularly exhibits her work in Kenya and abroad, including the Netherlands, Italy, Hong Kong, Denmark, Germany, Poland and her works are in private and public collections, including in her native Kenya, including the National Museum of Kenya, Safaricom Collection, PwC and MMC Africa Law.
