Jacek Waltos studied in the years 1957-1963 at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts
in Cracow. Independently from 1960 he engaged in sculpture, creating torsos and figures with an imprinted negative of the other figure. These works brought him first prizes at the annual exhibitions Sculpture of the Year 1965 and 1966. Since his student years, he was friends with Maciej Bieniasz, Zbylut Grzywacz and Leszek Sobocki, and in 1966 he formed the Wprost group with them (in the first exhibition
in 1966 also included Barbara Skąpska). The Wprosters surprised critics and the public with the ostentatious realism of their works, verging on brutal literalism in depicting existence,
as well as the program, emphasizing opposition to art indifferent to the dramas of life. Waltos, the least "publicist" among the group's members, used to address existential and spiritual problems in a symbolic way, using works of classical literature and art.
