Cap belonging to an officer of the Polish Merchant Navy who served in the structures of the Polish Armed Forces in the West (PSZnZ).
The cap is made of dark navy blue cloth, with a distinctive lacquered visor and a strap attached with metal buttons. On the front there is a byelier emblem of the Polish Merchant Navy for officers in the form of the national coat of arms wz.1927 with a crowned eagle, under it a silver anchor, the whole covered by a gold wreath of laurel leaves.
A comparable eagle is described in Mr. Tomasz Zawistowski's book "Polskie Orły do Czapki 1939-1945", page 133, illustration 264.----
After the defeat of the September campaign in 1939, the Polish Merchant Marine (PMH) was subordinated to the Polish Government in Exile in London, becoming part of the PSZnZ structure. PMH ships were used for military transport, Allied supplies and carrying weapons and people, often operating in extremely dangerous conditions. Officers of the Polish Merchant Marine played a key role in Allied naval operations, and their uniforms were adapted to British patterns while retaining the national insignia.
Officers' caps of this type were worn by PMH command staff and are extremely rare on the collector's market.
