Biography
From 1832 to 1837, he studied painting in Rome, where he trained at the French Academy under Horace Vernet. In 1839, he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He remained strongly influenced by the work of his teacher, Vernet. He gained public recognition as a painter of historical and battle scenes; he also painted genre scenes, equestrian portraits, depictions of horses, scenes from the lives of the Italian people, and seascapes.
