47 [MILLOT Claude-François-Xavier], Abrégé de l'Histoire Romaine orné de 49 estampes dravées en taille-douce avec le plus grand soin, qui en représentent les principaux sujets.

Paris 1789, Nyon firstborn and son, VIII p. +192 pp.

A beautifully illustrated original edition of the history of ancient Rome from its foundation to the reign of Constantine the Great. Author Claude-François-Xavier Millot (1726-1785), was a French clergyman, writer and historian. The in-4to format work has a frontispiece and 48 full-page engravings depicting events in the history of ancient Rome. All the plates are signed by the most distinguished painters and engravers of 18th century France, Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1724-1780), Charles Eisen (1720-1778), Benjamin Bolomey (1739-1819), Nicolas Ransonnette (1745-1810), and Hubert Gravelot (1699-1773). The 3 copperplate engravings out of a total of 49 are double-folded and larger than the book format. They depict a naval battle from the First Punic War, the triumph of Julius Caesar during the First Triumvirate, and the palace of Emperor Nero. The item for sale is one of the most beautifully illustrated histories of ancient Rome published in 18th century France. Individual engravings from this publication are separately stored and cataloged at BNF!

Period binding, full leather in medium condition with rubbing and minor losses, especially at the edges; spine embossed and gilt with title and geometric-plant designs, but also with rubbing and losses; interior in average condition, occasionally stained but dry; engravings in average, db and bdb condition with clear plate reflection; only a few with stains, and one with Nero's palace with a small loss in the margin outside the plate imprint; overall average condition.
