*Aulicus Inculpatus*, translated from the French by an anonymous author, translated by Joachim Pastorio.
Amsterdam, 1649. Published by Ludv. Elzevirium. (11 x 7 cm), fol. [5], p. 204, fol. [18], copperplate frontispiece, contemporary leather binding.
(Estr. Vol. 26). This is a Latin translation of a French work, prepared by Joachim Pastorius. The text itself is of a moral and political nature and belongs to a body of literature critical of court life. It is a typical 17th-century anti-court treatise, depicting the court as an environment full of deceit and rivalry, morally dangerous, and requiring a constant game of appearances. Eustachy Refuge was a French writer and political official at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, most often associated with the tradition of political and moral literature describing court life and the mechanisms of power. Gilded spine, with a slight loss here. In good condition.
