Ryszard Zając (1929 Kosow Huculski - 2016 Binningen near Basel, Switzerland) studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Szczecin in 1948-52, received his architect's diploma in 1952. Then he moved to Warsaw and undertook further studies in architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology, graduating after two years with a master's degree. He practiced the architectural profession for a rather short period of time, as from 1960 he devoted himself exclusively to painting, becoming a member of ZPAP in 1963. His education had a strong influence on the nature of his art. The subjects of his works are primarily architectural landscapes, most often inspired by a specific place. They are characterized by crowded buildings formed of irregular blocks, complex perspective of space, intense color of climbing cities. Numerous still lifes with cubic forms are characterized by the play of shapes and colors. The paint is laid down with a spatula and gives the smooth surface of the canvas a kind of vibration. The artist has exhibited at home and abroad. Large shows of his works took place at the Museo di Roma Palazza Braschi 1976, the National Museum in Szczecin (1977), the Zapiecek Gallery in Warsaw 1977, 1996, 2004), among others.
