The compilation of the Catholic translation of the Bible into Polish and its complete edition in the translation of the Jesuit, Jakub Wujek, was one of the first manifestations of the Counter-Reformation in the Republic. Protestantism was beginning to take root in the country, and the first Polish-language translations of the Bible were appearing. Wujek's Bible was intended to replace the previous, not very successful translations and to counterbalance the two Protestant editions: The Brest Bible (1563) and the Nesvizh Bible (1572). This is evidenced by the mention in the preface: "against the hangovers of these times belonging" (hangover: formerly adherence to some heresy or any of the Protestant religions). The second edition appeared nearly 150 years after the first edition, at a time when the authorities of the Catholic Church in Silesia noticed the increasing reaching of the Polish-speaking faithful to editions of Protestant Bibles (in 1726, for example, the Gdansk Bible was published in Polish for the third time). Moreover, Silesia - as a disputed place between Catholic Austria and Protestant Prussia - was a field of rivalry between the two Christian denominations.
