Eugeniusz Niemirowski was born in Lviv. After World War II, he settled in Wroclaw. There he began his studies at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in the painting studios of Prof. Leon Dolżycki and Prof. Maria Dawska. However, during his studies he changed direction and in 1953 received a diploma from the Department of Glass and Ceramics. While still a student, he became a member of the Association of Polish Artists. Since 1965, he belonged to the art collective "Group of 8″. In the 1970s he decided to change his life, abandoned Wroclaw and moved to Parzyce in the municipality of Nowogrodziec, where he bought the buildings after the old hydroelectric power plant and turned them into a studio for unique ceramics.
The artist himself was involved in all stages of pottery making, from preparing the masses and glazes through designing and making the molds, decorating and glazing them to firing. He was primarily known for producing artistic utilitarian objects, such as vases, plates, bowls and various containers, with striking simplicity of shape. He gave them a unique character by applying decorations in the form of paintings or reliefs deliberately juxtaposed with smooth surfaces, often in contrasting colors. He most often used plant and animal motifs, as well as genre scenes with figures in stylized folk costumes. These decorations were often arranged in short thematic series, such as "knights" or "musicians." A separate group of works is made up of dishes, in which the main carrier of aesthetic values is the author's glazes of varying colors, texture and luster.
E. Niemirowski also became known as a creator of original relief and relief ceramic tiles. His oeuvre also includes full-size sculptures and sophisticated color paintings on canvas, which, however, he rarely presented at exhibitions.
E. Niemirowski's works were exhibited at solo exhibitions in Wroclaw, Boleslawiec, Jelenia Gora, Stockholm, Dresden, Semily (Czechoslovakia). The artist also took part in group exhibitions in Boleslawiec, Wroclaw, Warsaw, Jelenia Gora, Walbrzych, Olsztyn and Dresden. He has received many honors and awards for his work.
E. Niemirowski's ceramics have found their way into the collections of museums in Bratislava, Berlin and Boleslawiec, as well as private collections in Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Belgium, Russia, Germany, Canada and the USA.
In 1983, the studio in Parzyce hosted renowned Polish photographer Zofia Rydet, who traveled around Poland as part of the "Sociological Record" project, photographing people in the interiors of their homes or workplaces. In Zofia Rydet's archive (zofiarydet.pl) you can find several photos from this visit.
We also invite you to read the catalog published in 1983 by the Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions in Jelenia Gora on the occasion of an exhibition of E. Niemirowski's works.
