A jug in the Tuscan "bucaletta" style
Glazed ceramic, height 13 cm, base diameter 6.5 cm
A hand-painted ceramic jug, modeled after the traditional Italian bucaletta—a small vessel used to serve wine in the regions of Tuscany and Umbria. Made of glazed ceramic, it features a light, creamy color palette and is decorated with classic cobalt-blue floral motifs. The central panel, in a warm yellow hue, bears the inscription “Bevi Santo,” characteristic of commemorative vessels associated with the tasting of Vin Santo, a sweet dessert wine served during festive meals.
The piece is likely only stylized to resemble an earlier design; the quality of its craftsmanship suggests the 20th century. The piece bears clear signs of handcrafted work: subtle irregularities in the brushstrokes, minor asymmetries in the form, and variations in line thickness emphasize its artisanal character.
Condition: good; slight cracks in the glaze near the handle; natural signs of use typical of handcrafted ceramics; the upper rim is slightly chipped.
Bukaleta, derived from the Greek bokalion and the Italian boccale, is a name originating from the term for a jug or goblet made of fired clay. This vessel is still used in Istria for serving wine, most often during celebrations and special occasions, as well as for preparing and serving traditional soup
