tempera, wood panel, chalk-and-gypsum ground, gilding; 35.5 x 31 cm.
Russia, 19th/20th century.
An icon with a four-panel composition, framed by a wide border decorated with stylized floral motifs.
Upper left panel: a depiction of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. Blaise of Sebaste; the saints are shown in full figure, in episcopal vestments, holding Gospel books in their hands; both are venerated as patrons of cattle, agriculture, and protectors in times of need.
Upper right panel: the holy martyrs Florus and Laurus—early Christian saints, traditionally depicted together, and recognized in Russia as the patron saints of horses and horse breeders.
Lower left panel: St. George the Victorious on a white horse, thrusting his spear into the dragon’s mouth; in the background, a castle tower with the figure of Princess Elizabeth.
Lower right panel: the icon of the Mother of God “Unexpected Joy”; on the left side of the panel, a sinner kneeling before the icon; on the right, an image of the Mother of God holding the Infant Jesus with wounds on His hands and feet. Below the composition is a decorative cartouche with an inscription in Church Slavonic: “Unexpected Joy of the Most Holy Mother of God.”
