Mária Hertay (1932–2018)—Hungarian printmaker, painter, and enamel artist, born in Sopron. From 1955 to 1959, she studied painting at the Képzőművészeti Főiskola in Budapest, and then, from 1959 to 1963, printmaking. Her teachers included, among others, Sándor Ék, Géza Fónyi, Gyula Pap, and János Kmetty.
She specialized in lithography and etching, creating subtle, meticulously detailed depictions of nature. A distinctive place in her work was occupied by botanical motifs—flowers, grasses, and trees—as well as landscapes and cityscapes, particularly those associated with Sopron and Budapest. In her later years, she also worked in artistic enamel and sacred art; she created series on biblical themes as well as works intended for church interiors.
She has exhibited her work regularly since 1968. Her works are held, among other places, in the collections of the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest and the Xantus János Museum in Győr.
