Helio-engraving (on paper) with clear dimensions of 25.5 x 38 cm (composition size) within the passe-partout; signed on the plate at the lower left with the monogram: JMrP1889, and the inscription below the composition: J. Matejko pinx. Printer: J. Löwy, Vienna
The work depicts a monumental, highly detailed historical scene—the coronation of Bolesław Chrobry at Gniezno Cathedral in 1025. It is an outstanding example of 19th-century workshop printmaking, executed in the heliogravure technique, which allowed for the perfect rendering of the nuances of light and shadow and the finest details of Jan Matejko’s masterful drawing.
