Jan Lebenstein (1930 - 1999) is one of the most important Polish postwar artists. He studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts under Prof. Eugeniusz Eibisch and Artur Nacht-Samborski. He gained international recognition with the Grand Prix award at the Biennale of the Young in Paris (1959); he soon settled in Paris, consistently developing his own language of figuration - from "axial figures" to later, fantastic-symbolic representations with animal and mythological themes.
