This mine was established in 1825 and was initially mined using the open pit method. Although a deep shaft "Koszelev" was built there in 1875, the exploitation of the giant opencast coal and sand continued there. Work on "stripping the open pit" (removing the top layer of earth and rock to expose the coal seam) was a key part of the operation of the site in the late 19th century.
