Biography
He was of Hungarian descent. He grew up in Budapest. He was active in Paris from 1930 onward. One of the leading figures of geometric abstraction, he was a precursor of Op Art—art that employs optical illusions. From the 1950s onward, he sought to define this movement by drafting a series of manifestos. He referred to his abstract work as “kinetic art,” striving to create the impression of movement through the effects employed in his pieces. Beginning in 1960, the artist developed the concept of a visual alphabet titled “Planetary Folklore” in his theoretical manifestos. He wanted to use his artistic ideas to decorate buildings.
