Biography
Monika Weiss is a visual artist and sound composer, creating installations, drawings, films, musical compositions, and sculptures. She lives in New York City. She is a full professor at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis. She studied music and visual arts. She is a member of HyphenHub, a New York-based interdisciplinary new media art organization. Her works have been presented in over 100 exhibitions worldwide, including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Memory & Human Rights in Santiago, Chile; the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami; the Center for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw; the Lehman College Art Gallery, CUNY in New York; the Sanskriti Museum in New Delhi; and Harvestworks in New York. She is the creator of public art projects at the World Financial Center Winter Garden in New York and at Gruenberg in Zielona Góra. Other notable international exhibitions include the Stavros Niarchos Art Foundation, Athens; Frauenmuseum, Bonn; and the North Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks. Her sound installation *Metamorphosis – Przemiana* (2021–) was shown as part of a survey of Polish feminist art at the A.I.R. Gallery, New York (2022) in collaboration with Galeria lokal_30 in Warsaw and has since been acquired for the permanent collection of the Sculpture Park at the Center for Polish Sculpture in Orońsko (2024). A recipient of numerous awards, in 2023 she received an individual grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to support her upcoming long-term public art project, *Nirbhaya*, planned for Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza near the United Nations in New York City. Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Center for Contemporary Art (CSW) at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Center for Polish Sculpture (CRP) in Orońsko, the Frost Museum in Miami, and many others.
