Magistrate's document for abbot Jan Norbert Umlauf, Moravia - Olomouc 1740
Manuscript on handmade paper, wax seal, official signatures.
An impressive 18th century official document issued to Jan Norbert Umlauf, abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery at Hradzisko in Olomouc. The manuscript was drawn up on handmade paper, with ornate and careful chancellery calligraphy characteristic of the Habsburg administration of the 18th century. The document retains the original signatures of city officials and a preserved wax seal with the word "Republic" prominently displayed, emphasizing the official character of the letter and the autonomy of the city government.
As a whole, it presents a high level of old document art - the decorative layout of the text, elegant calligraphy and representative form make it an exceptionally attractive example of Central European office culture of the Baroque era.
The document was created during the period of the expansion of Olomouc's military importance as one of the main strongholds of the Habsburg monarchy. It is possible that its content was related to the administrative or property affairs of the Premonstratensian monastery in the context of the developing city fortifications and the reorganization of the city's defensive space. In the 18th century, the relationship between the magistrate, the military and church institutions played an important administrative and economic role in Moravia.
A rare and decorative monument related to the history of Moravia and Olomouc, preserved in a decorative wooden frame under glass.
