Jan Weyssenhoff coat of arms Swan (born April 11, 1774 in Andżelmujja in Inflants, died May 19, 1848 Samoklęski Lubelskie), major general, participant in the Polish-Russian War of 1792, the Kościuszko Uprising, the Napoleonic Wars, the November Uprising.
He came from the German Weiss family, which had already been fully polonized in the 17th century.
He began his military service on December 14, 1789 with the rank of second lieutenant in the 8th Lithuanian infantry regiment. He participated in the War of 1792, being promoted to lieutenant on August 13. After the victory of the bargainers, he was active in the insurrectionist conspiracy in Vilnius.
During the Kosciuszko Uprising he was adjutant to Jakub Jasinski, in this position he was promoted to captain. He later transferred to the 8th Lithuanian Cavalry Regiment with the rank of major. After the fall of the uprising he remained out of the army.
On December 20, 1806 he enlisted in the army of the Duchy of Warsaw as adjutant to General Jan Henryk Dabrowski with the rank of chief of the squadron. On February 23, 1807 he was major in the 12th infantry regiment, and on July 29, 1808 he was promoted to colonel, regimental commander, and participated in the Austrian campaign of 1809 and the Moscow campaign of 1812. On February 3, 1813 he was appointed Brig. Gen. as commander of the Cavalry Brigade. At the head of the brigade he participated in the Saxon campaign of 1813, during which he was taken prisoner in Dresden.
After his release in the army of the Kingdom of Poland. On January 20, 1815, he became commander of the Lancer Brigade and then commander of the Cavalry Division. On September 3, 1826 he was promoted to major general. In 1830 he was credited with 28 years and 2 months of "impeccable" military service.
After the outbreak of the November Uprising, he initially served as commander of the Cavalry Division; on January 23, 1831, he took command of all the insurgent army's cavalry, but as early as February 26 he was transferred from this position, under the pretext of age, to organizer of reserves in Krakow. After the fall of the uprising, he was exiled to Kostroma. Released from captivity in 1833, he returned to Lubelskie, to Samoklęska, which he bought from the Czartoryski family in 1824. He died on May 19, 1848 in Samoklęska, and was buried in the family's church chapel in Kamionka.
He was awarded the Legion of Honor 4th and 5th class, the Order of Virtuti Militari, a Knight of the Order of the Iron Crown, the Order of Saint Anne 1st class, the Order of Saint Vladimir 2nd class.In the Congress Kingdom he became a Knight of the Order of Saint Stanislaus 1st class. In 1830 he was awarded the Mark of Honor for 25 years of service.
He was a member of the freemason lodge Superstition Victorious in 1810.
