Original drawing, pencil, colored pencils, and gouache on a sheet measuring 30.2 x 21.2 cm. In the lower right corner, a mirror-image signature: FS 1663 [1963].
On the reverse side of the sheet, in pencil, the title “Sen 2.”
Condition: The drawing covers almost the entire sheet, but a passe-partout sheet has been glued on top (secured at the corners); subsequently, the left margin was perforated (almost damaging the drawing hidden beneath the passe-partout).
Franciszek Starowieyski (pseudonym: Jan Byk, 1930–2009)—painter, printmaker, set designer, and co-founder of the Polish school of poster art (he created approximately 300 posters). He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the studio of Wojciech Weiss and Adam Marczyński (1949–52), then continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in Michał Bylina’s studio, where he received his diploma in 1955. From 1964, he served as the artistic director of the magazine “Ty i Ja” (“You and Me”), a rather unique publication by Polish standards, published from 1960 to 1973; it was a modern magazine devoted to lifestyle, fashion, art, and literature. The monthly was characterized by its avant-garde graphic design. This was ensured by the artistic supervision of prominent artists from the Polish school of poster art (including R. Cieślewicz, H. Tomaszewski, and F. Starowieyski).
