Carl Sigismund Kunth (born June 18, 1788 in Leipzig, died March 22, 1850 in Berlin) - German botanist.
He was one of the first to learn about and classify the plants of America.
He was Alexander von Humboldt's assistant at the University of Berlin, and from 1813 to 1819 in Paris. During this time, he classified the plants collected by Humboldt and Aime Bonplaind during their travels to America
Upon his return to Berlin in 1820, he became a professor of botany, as well as deputy director of the botanical garden. In 1829, he was elected to the academy of sciences in Berlin.
In 1829 he went on a three-year trip to South America, visiting Chile, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Central America and the West Indies.
After his death, the plants he collected became the property of the government of the Kingdom of Prussia and became part of the royal herbarium in Berlin.
