Vanity mirror.
Late 19th century.
Workshop of a master jeweler at the Vienna Kunstgewerbe.
Single-sided, deep repoussé work with the original material thickness preserved; the background of the relief has a silky matte finish, delicately “drawn” with a tool. The frame is hand-curved with a hand-rolled edge. The wire ornamental ribbon (a winding band) is formed separately, separately soldered, and perfectly fitted into the relief —a technique highly characteristic of the Art Nouveau workshops in Vienna and Prague, which combined repoussé with silver wire appliqué.On the wing and the background, one can see short, soft tool marks, a lack of repetitive rhythm, and no grid of strikes—all of which indicate the handiwork of a master, not an apprentice, without the use of dies or presses.A prime example of Art Nouveau artistic craftsmanship, this piece was most likely created as a special commission for a wealthy client.
