Lot information
This richly decorated brass box is a precise example of Chinese metalwork and craftsmanship from the turn of the century. The entire exterior surface is covered in detailed high relief with traditional motifs of five-fingered dragons, dynamically intertwining among stylized clouds and sea waves. In oriental symbolism, the dragon represents power, strength and protection, with the five fingers on the claws historically referring to imperial grandeur. The central dragon on the lid dominates the entire composition, which smoothly transitions to the side walls of the box.more photos
