Wladyslaw Lam (Konjic 1893 - 1984 Gdansk) - Polish painter, graphic artist and art critic.He was born in the Bosnian town of Konjic and received his early education there. Already as a child he was noticed to have a talent for painting. After arriving in Krakow in 1912, he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in the studios of Teodor Axentowicz and Jozef Mehoffer. In 1918 he defended his diploma and began working professionally. He was a teacher of gymnastics in Lodz, taught drawing at the Modlin Cadet Corps No. 2 and at a junior high school in Poznan. In 1925 he went to France, stayed in Paris and traveled around southern France, painting architectural views and landscapes. He was a member and secretary of the Swit and Plastics groups, his tasks included organizing exhibitions. In 1929 he went to France again, and upon his return he joined the New Generation grouping and settled in Lviv. He created figural compositions, portraits, architectural views and landscapes. In 1934, he became head of the Department of Freehand and Figural Drawings at the Lviv Polytechnic University, and was simultaneously given the title of deputy professor. After the occupation of Lviv by the occupants, Wladyslaw Lam was forbidden to work as a lecturer. In 1945, thanks to the intercession of Professor Stanislaw Lukasiewicz, after being expelled from Lviv, he arrived in Gdansk and became part of the group organizing the Faculty of Architecture at the Gdansk University of Technology. His task was to organize the Department of Drawing and Sculpture. He was the founder of the association of painters and sculptors, which organized the 1st exhibition of painting at the Gdansk University of Technology. He taught concurrently at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Sopot. Despite retirement, he continued teaching and painting, among other things, from 1956 he experimented with allusive abstraction. Wladyslaw Lam's activities included art criticism, he was the author and co-author of many books, columns and treatises in magazines, his comments were included in exhibition catalogs. After 1945, he traveled throughout Europe, being invited to Italy, France, Switzerland, Yugoslavia and West Germany. He continued to create throughout the postwar period and participated in many exhibitions at home and abroad. He was also a creator of lithographs and woodcuts, and developed his own technique for creating monorite.
