Cossart Gordon Madeira Verdelho 10 y.o. 0.75L 19%. Madeira Verdelho is a type of fortified wine produced on the Portuguese-owned island of Madeira, specifically from the Verdelho grape. Verdelho has long-standing ties to Madeira - it was one of the original varieties brought to the island, probably from mainland Portugal, and its name represented both the style of wine and the grape variety from which it was traditionally made. After the phylloxera epidemic, in the 1860s, destroyed all of Madeira's vines, there was tremendous pressure on winemakers to restore their vineyards and the supply of Madeira wine. Demand for Madeira was high at the time, so if a producer was faster than his competitors, he was almost guaranteed immediate sales at high prices. Verdelho ripens earlier than other varieties (especially its closest stylistic rival, Sercial), so it is one of the more common varietal Madeira wines. Existing Verdelho vines are usually planted on the cooler, northern slopes of the island. They are still used to produce the medium-dry style of wine with which the varietal's name has become associated. With the passage of time (which almost all Madeira wines endure without too much trouble), Madeira Verdelho wines acquire an extremely complex character, smelling of roasted nuts and sweet charcoal. At the same time, they retain their characteristic acidity, which is one of the key factors in their longevity. Estimated price: 300-330 PLN
